This three-part project took students from the design of a single house “for a gardener” to the design of row housing to a communal house, gathered on a single site around a shared park, in Lowertown, Ottawa. The polychromatic models (acrylic paint on card) invited students to consider fundamental architectural conditions to do with relationships with the earth and the sky, and to articulate structure, support, and protective enclosure. The projects were incremental. Models all fit on a common base, “completing the block” one project at a time, by the end of the term.
